Kathmandu

I'm back!

I realised I may have been a little misleading in the last post. I wasn't walking up Everest at all - just to Base Camp. I was away on a trip organised by Exodus ... and it was great.

It feels weird to be home after so long away - especially so because I had no contact with the outside world for almost the entire time away - there is still no mobile reception anywhere on the trek route, and internet access is sparse and wasn't used except to send the odd e-mail home.

Over the coming few posts I'll be explaining what we actually did and how it was - accompanied by photos of course.

Days 1 and 2 of the trip were both taken up with travelling to Kathmandu from London. Not helped much by a delay to the second leg of the journey, meaning ten hours in Muscat airport. Fortunately, access to the business lounge made this slightly more manageable.

Day 3 was given over to a brief tour of Kathmandu and a free afternoon. Nothing too strenuous to start with! Here are some shots from the tour.

Hi Dave,

Came across your blog after searching in Google for mobile phone reception on the Everest Base Camp trek. I too will be doing this trek, also with Exodus, in April 2009. I want to do a blog similar to yours, but post to it in real time from my iPhone so have been checking the web for the existence of mobile phone reception on the route. Looks like it's not going to be possible. Ah well. Anyway, looks like you enjoyed your trip!

Best,
Alastair

Hi there,

it was one of the best trips I've been on - the Exodus guys were brilliant and the group was great too.

To be honest though I don't think I turned on my phone between flying to Lukla and getting back the Kathmandu - but I don't believe there is any reception for most of the journey. You might get some in Namche though, although you can also pay for internet use there too in one of the shops.

The other trouble you could have with the iPhone is the battery - the cold really drains it. If you want to keep it working it's best to keep it in your sleeping bag with you overnight.

Hope you enjoy your trip - let me know if you can when you start posting and I'll be interested to see the results.

Dave
